Course No. 2400

Taught by John Sutherland,
California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
University College London Ph.D., Edinburgh University
How does literature connect a nation to its past? And why does hearing a poem, attending a play, or reading a novel so often become more than the act itself? How do such works open windows into the historical, cultural, or intellectual worlds of the writers who created them?
Few nations offer a literary legacy that addresses these questions as well as that of Great Britain.

Point of View, Perspective, and Focalization: Modeling Mediation in NarrativeStories do not actually exist in the world but are created and structured - modeled - through the process of mediation, i.e. through the means and techniques by which they are represented. This is an important field, not only for narratology but also for literary and media studies. The articles in this volume, contributed by international scholars from seven countries, address this problem anew by reviewing the differentiation of mediation and re-defining its dimensions both in literary texts and other media such as drama and theater, film, and computer games.

The word "social" does not. Yet, as this book shows, it should-if, that is, we wish to understand where literary criticism as we think of it today came from.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie BarrowsThe Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows

The story is told in a series of letter and telegrams, which is always magical to me. I find it amazing that an author (or authors in this case..) can create a story that way. I love stories told in this matter. It feels as if you have come across a chest full of old letters in your granny's attic. Almost as if you are spying on someone else's life.
