This book contains a selection of papers presented at the First Forlì Conference on Interpreting Studies, which saw the participation of leading researchers in the field. It offers a comprehensive overview of the current situation and future prospects in interpretation studies, and in the interpreting profession at the beginning of a new century. Topics addressed include not only theoretical and methodological issues, but also applications to training and quality.

Interpreting Matters is the first course on video to show interpreting in action. It focuses on the role of the interpreter in the courtroom and in particular on interpreting in a British Immigration Appellate Authority court. However, the lessons of this environment are extended in the accompanying book to other areas of public service interpreting.
The relationship between translation and conflict is highly relevant in today’s globalised and fragmented world, and this is attracting increased academic interest. This collection of essays was inspired by the first international conference to directly address the translator and interpreter’s involvement in situations of military and ideological conflict, and its representation in fiction.
Listening: The listening portion consists of two conversations and four academic lectures, all much longer than current passages. Note-taking is now not only allowed but necessary for successful completion of tasks. Critical thinking, interpreting, categorizing, and understanding purpose and stance are necessary skills.
