The New Psychology of Language: Cognitive and Functional Approaches To Language Structure- Volume II

The New Psychology of Language: Cognitive and Functional Approaches To Language Structure- Volume IIFrom the point of view of psychology and cognitive science, much of modern linguistics is too formal and mathematical to be of much use. The newly emerging approaches to language termed, "Functional and Cognitive Linguistics," however, are much less formally oriented. Instead, functional and cognitive approaches to language structure are typically couched in terms already familiar to cognitive scientists: perception, attention, conceptualization, meaning, symbols, categories, schemas, perspectives, discourse context, social interaction, and communicative goals.

Current Morphology

Current MorphologyAndrew Carstairs-McCarthy discusses current issues in morphology within linguistic theory, giving fair coverage to all approaches which have been influential over the last twenty years. He concentrates not only on the generative linguistic mainstream, discussing the lexicalist morphology initiated by Chomsky and the syntactically oriented approaches that have developed in the `80s, but also on approaches that are less fashionable or relatively unknown to English-speaking linguists.

Thinking Syntactically: A Guide to Argumentation and Analysis (Blackwell Textbooks in Linguistics) Thinking Syntactically: A Guide to Argumentation and Analysis is a textbook designed to teach introductory students the skills of relating data to theory and theory to data.
* Helps students develop their thinking and argumentation skills rather than merely introducing them to one particular version of syntactic theory.
* Structured around a wide range of exercises that use clear and compelling logic to build arguments and lead up to theoretical proposals.
* Data drawn from current media sources, including newspapers, books, and television programs, to help students formulate and test hypotheses.
* Generative in spirit, but does not focus on specific theoretical approaches but enables students to understand and evaluate different approaches more easily.
* Written by an established author with an international reputation.

Handbook of Art Therapy
27

Handbook of Art TherapyThis essential handbook provides a complete and practical overview of art therapy: how it works, how it can be used, and with whom. Demonstrated are interventions for children, adolescents, and adults facing a variety of clinical problems and life challenges. Case-based chapters from leading practitioners illuminate major theoretical perspectives, including psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, developmental, and other approaches. Also examined is what current research in psychology and neuroscience can tell us about the scientific basis for art therapy. Discussing applications in individual psychotherapy, couple and family treatment, and group work, the Handbook includes over 100 samples of drawings and other artwork. The process of art therapy is illustrated in helping clients manage and cope with such problems as trauma, sexual abuse, developmental and learning disabilities, drug and alcohol misuse, serious mental illness, and medical illness. Appendices include descriptions of empirically supported approaches to art-based assessment, some of which are written by the instrument developers themselves.
