The Country Doctor
One fascinating aspect of this novel is the depiction of cretinism, which was endemic at the time in the region of France about which Balzac wrote. Balzac did not describe the cretins as having goiter or neck enlargement, even though the relationship between thyroid size and cretinism was already known in the medical literature by the early 1830s. Dr. Benassis evidently thought that the "stagnant air" created conditions favorable to the spread of cretinism. By removing the cretins, he thought they would minimize the further spread of "this physical and mental contagion."

A Chapter of Adventures
A coastal fishing lad, by an act of heroism, secures the interest of a ship-owner, who places him as midshipman on board one of his ships. In company with two of his fellows, Jack is left behind, at Alexandria, in the hands of the revolted Egyptian troops, and is present through the bombardment and the scenes of riot and blood-shed which accompany it. His adventures continue aboard the Wild Wave, when they meet one of the fiercest hurricanes enroute to Calcutta. Will Jack and his friends survive?
This is a novel about the outstanding adventures which take place in the canyons of the Colorado River and is intended for everyone who is fond of the adventures in the West which are described with a good sense of humor, also containing a number of great original photographs. The author of the book has created it basing on his own experience. When Frederick Dellaenbaugh was young, he traveled with John Wesley Powell to the Colorado River with the aim of exploration and research.
I have had pleasure in editing this little book, not only because it is the work of my youngest son, but also because it contains the results of a good deal of experience of life under novel aspects, as seen by young, fresh, and observant eyes. How the book came to be written is as follows: The boy, whose two years' narrative forms the subject of these pages, was at the age of sixteen seized with inflammation of the lungs, from which he was recovering so slowly and unsatisfactorily, that I was advised by London physicians to take him from the business he was then learning in Yorkshire, and send him on a long sea voyage.
