Cultural Interfaces in Academic Setting and Beyond

This volume comprises fifteen articles, which share a focus on the issue of culture and culture contact in academia and in academic and professional dialogue. A broad view of culture is adopted as “the distinctive ways of living, thinking and behaving” of any group of people identified with reference to a geographical location, as in, e.g., Finnish culture, a selected prominent feature, as in student culture, or shared interests, values and practices, as in academic culture.

Cognitive Interfaces - Constraints on Linking Cognitive Information

This book brings new perspectives to bear on the architecture of the mind and the relationship between language and cognition. It considers how information is linked in the mind between different cognitive and expressive levels - so that people can, for example, talk about what they see and act upon what they hear - and how these linkages are and need to be constrained. The book is concerned in particular with the perception and representation of spatial structure.

This volume is a collection of papers that explore the nature of the interfaces of syntax with semantics, phonology, and discourse. The papers investigate the various ways in which elliptical structures are related to these interfaces. As such, they not only make a valuable contribution to generative linguistic research but, more generally, help to deepen our understanding of the relation between form and meaning in natural language.
