Rehearsing New Roles: How College Students Develop as WritersRehearsing New Roles: How College Students Develop as Writers

In Rehearsing New Roles: How College Students Develop as Writers, Lee Ann Carroll argues for a developmental perspective to counter the fantasy held by many college faculty that students should, or could, be taught to write once so that ever after, they can write effectively on any topic, any place, any time. Carroll demonstrates in this volume why a one- or two-semester, first-year course in writing cannot meet all the needs of even more experienced writers. She then shows how students' complex literacy skills develop slowly, often idiosyncratically, over the course of their college years, as they choose or are coerced to take on new roles as writers.

Social Roles and Language Practices in Late Modern EnglishSocial Roles and Language Practices in Late Modern English

The book presents a ground-breaking overview of the interconnections between socio-cultural reality and language practices, by looking at the different ways in which social roles are performed, maintained, adopted and assigned through linguistic means. The introductory chapter discusses and evaluates different theoretical approaches to the question, and the eight articles by leading scholars in the field offer a multiplicity of methodological and theoretical approaches to the description and interpretation of social roles as expressed in a variety of texts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Who Cares About English UsageWho Cares About English Usage

This classic guide surveys the key controversies with wit, common sense, some entertaining quizzes and linguist's sharp insight into the ways we actually speak and write. He explores the dispute about the word "dispute" - is it pronounced "DIS-pute" or "dis-PUTE"? - the fate of the letter T in "often", and the best way of referring to the, er, bathroom. Language, he argues, should be a tool and not our master, and it is always profoundly marked by social trends such as changing gender roles. Hopefully (if that's the right word), we can all acquire greater linguistic sensitivity without imposing on ourselves a strait-jacket of rigid conformity. This book offers both reassurance and help.
