Shakespeare's Feminine Endings: Disfiguring Death in the TragediesShakespeare's Feminine Endings: Disfiguring Death in the Tragedies

Philippa Berry draws on feminist theory, postmodern thought and queer theory, to challenge existing critical notions of what is fundamental to Shakespearean tragedy. She shows how, through a network of images clustered around feminine or feminized characters, these plays 'disfigure' conventional ideas of death as a bodily end, as their figures of women are interwoven with provocative meditations upon matter, time, the soul, and the body. The scope of these tragic speculations was radical in Shakespeare's day; yet they also have a surprising relevance to contemporary debates about time and matter in science and philosophy.

Goddesses and the Divine FeminineGoddesses and the Divine Feminine

This landmark work presents the most illuminating portrait we have to date of goddesses and sacred female imagery in Western culture--from prehistory to contemporary goddess movements. Beautifully written, lucidly conceived, and far-ranging in its implications, this work will help readers gain a better appreciation of the complexity of the social forces-- mostly androcentric--that have shaped the symbolism of the sacred feminine. At the same time, it charts a new direction for finding a truly egalitarian vision of God and human relations through a feminist-ecological spirituality.

The Improper FeminineThe Improper Feminine

The women’s sensation novel of the 1860s and the New Woman writing of the 1890s were among the chief literary sensations of their day. They were widely read, heatedly discussed in the newspaper and periodical press, imitated, parodied and, in some cases, adapted for the stage. In short, they were part of the general cultural currency of the second half of the nineteenth century. Despite (or perhaps because of) this fact, the novels and stories at the centre of this study are, on the whole, works which had disappeared from view, or had been relegated to the status of minor historical curiosities, until their rediscovery in the wake of the second-wave feminism of the 1970s.

Managing the Monstrous FeminineManaging the Monstrous Feminine

Managing the Monstrous Feminine takes a unique approach to the study of the material and discursive practices associated with the construction and regulation of the female body. Jane Ussher examines the ways in which medicine, science, the law and popular culture combine to produce fictions about femininity, positioning the reproductive body as the source of women's power, danger and weakness.

Feminine Knits: 22 Timeless DesignsFeminine Knits: 22 Timeless DesignsThis is a really good book. I'm impressed with the quality of the patterns, I would make and wear most of them. Unlike several of other knitting books, this one has mostly garments and not a lot of accessories like hats and scarves. The patterns are up to date and elegant. Lots of possibilities here!
