Being a nice person, I found this book useful. A tad painful though-I guess the truth hurts. Highly recommended. Well written and useful book. I am enjoying reading it and finding it very helpful. It's written in a very down-to-earth, practical style.
What if one of Napoleon's most trusted commanders had spiked Wellington's guns with a handful of nails at Waterloo in 1815, handing victory to his Emperor? What if Hitler hadn't paused for three vital days in his invasion of France in May 1940, allowing the British Expeditionary Force precious time to evacuate from Dunkirk? It is moments like these, argues Erik Durschmied, that provide The Hinge Factor in history: moments of stupidity, chance or accident which have irrevocably changed the outcome of human history, for better or for worse.

In this era of McDiets and packed schedules, it's never been harder to incorporate homemade wholesome food into our daily lives. The foods your child eats will not only influence his well being in crucial growing years but will form a pattern of healthy eating for adulthood. The main problem, of course, is time. Factor in finicky eating, cost, and cooking skills (or a lack thereof) and you have a generation of kids brought up on microwaved hot dogs and frozen pizza. But it doesn't have to be this way.
This book explores how the voices of authors and other researchers are manifested in academic discourse, and how the author handles the polyphonic interaction between these various parties. It represents a unique study of academic discourse in that it takes a doubly contrastive approach, focusing on the two factors of discipline and language at the same time. It is based on a large electronic corpus of 450 research articles from three disciplines (economics, linguistics and medicine) in three languages (English, French and Norwegian).
