Exploring Corpora for ESP Learning
33

Exploring Corpora for ESP LearningThe main aim of this book is to discuss the relevance of corpus work for learners of English as a foreign language and this volume is directed to all those who believe that taking the point of view of the learners into consideration may be important for their job: materials’ designers, teachers and applied linguists in general. I argue that analysing corpora, restricted in the range of the texttypes and topics collected, can be a useful learning activity, particularly for learners of ESP.

The Corpus Iuris Civilis in the Middle Ages (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History)

The Corpus Iuris Civilis in the Middle Ages (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History)Using documents, glosses, legal commentaries, and the first paleographical study of manuscripts since the mid-nineteenth century, the authors of this book trace the circulation of the Corpus Iuris Civilis from late antiquity until the early twelfth century.
They demonstrate that only the Novels found any significant readership in the early Middle Ages, and that Justinian’s Institutes, Code, and Digest emerged from obscurity only in the mid-eleventh century, when they were taken up by northern-Italian specialists in Lombard law. Separate chapters then consider the evidence for the textual history and reception of the Institutes, Code, and Digest.
Included in the volume are plates of all of the most important early manuscripts of Justinian’s works, most of which have never been published before.

Corpus Stylistics This book represents a new direction at the interface between the fields of stylistics and corpus linguistics, namely the use of a corpus methodology to investigate the ways in which people's words and thoughts are presented in written narratives. A 260,000 word electronic corpus of late 20th century written texts, including fiction, news reports and (auto)biographies is analysed by the authors, providing a detailed account of new theoretical insights, comparisons between different text types and detailed accounts of individual texts.

Antonymy: A Corpus-Based Perspective
35

Antonymy: A Corpus-Based PerspectiveAntonymy is the technical name used to describe 'opposites', pairs of words such as rich / poor, love / hate and male / female. Antonyms are a ubiquitous part of everyday language, and this book provides a detailed, comprehensive account of the phenomenon. As well as re-appraising traditional semantic theory and re-evaluating existing categories of antonymy, the book raises wider issues, including questions such as: Where do new atonyms come from? Which pairs can be regarded as 'good opposites'? Why do atonyms tend to favour a particular sequence in text?
