Listening to Spoken English
151

The main topic of this revised and updated edition is the comprehension of the spoken language. Subjects covered include the function of intonation and paralinguistic features, while revisions made include a new section on `pause' and how this interacts with rhythm.

Doing Creative Writing is the ideal guide to what you should expect, what will be expected of you and how you can get the most from your course.
It clearly and concisely outlines:
    * the contexts for creative writing courses, explaining where the subject has come from and why that matters
    * the content, structure and delivery of the courses, helping you to understand how your course will be shaped, what you will be asked to do and why
    * the skills you will develop, from self-discipline and time management through to the organisation of ideas, 'reading as a writer' and editing
    * possibilities beyond the course, showing how you continue to benefit from what you've learned.
Drawing on years of teaching and writing experience, as well as interviews with a wide range of students, Steve May provides all the background, advice and encouragement you need to embark on a creative writing course with complete confidence and to get maximum benefit from every writing session.

Martial Arts of the World: An Encyclopedia
67

Martial Arts of the World: An EncyclopediaEditor Green (anthropology, Texas A&M Univ.) and 41 contributors have put together an introduction to nearly 100 martial arts from all over the world. The result is not a comprehensive overview, but it does give the reader a glimpse into martial arts beyond the familiar karate and kung fu. Some articles present a nation's or region's martial arts (Philippines and Africa, for example); others focus on specific martial arts, ranging from the well-known (karate, judo, fencing) to the not-so-known (silat, capoeira, kali, naginata-do) to the historical (dueling, medieval swordsmanship) to philosophical topics (religion and spiritual development, social uses of martial arts). The articles are an uneven mix of scholarly research and popular topics, and many are dryly academic. Martial arts experts will notice some errors and evidence of bias in several articles, but overall this is a useful introduction for martial arts practitioners and general readers. Libraries with a martial arts collection and larger public libraries should acquire this. Katharine L. Kan, Allen Cty. P.L., Fort Wayne, IN
