Bridging Discourses in the ESL Classroom
Bridging Discourses in the ESL Classroom examines the interactions between learners and teachers in the language classroom. It aims to identify patterns of discourse which enable second language development but also support the learning of curriculum knowledge. These patterns are 'bridging discourses' in that they combine the everyday language used by the student, with the specialised language of the academic register.
This book presents strongly empirical, corpus-based studies of a range of English modal auxiliaries and modal constructions in specific uses. It also approaches some of the classic issues in the field of modality from new perspectives, notably that of the "Theory of Enunciative Operations" developed by the French linguist Antoine Culioli and his colleagues.
A Mid-Atlantic Handbook Americanan and British English
Observers of English are becoming increasingly aware of the differences between the two major varieties of the language: American English and British English. In theory, speakers of Mid-Atlantic English, a form of English which includes features of both varieties, are aware of the differences between American English and British English, and endeavor to use forms of the language which are easily understood.

This is the first text book to offer a comprehensive approach to Old Frisian. Part One begins with a succinct survey of the history of the Frisians during the Middle Ages, their society and literary culture. Next follow chapters on the phonology, morphology, word formation and syntax of Old Frisian. This part is concluded by a chapter on the Old Frisian dialects and one on problems regarding the periodization of Frisian and the close relationship between (Old) Frisian and (Old) English. Together, the diverse approaches considerably advance our knowledge of and insight into various aspects of Old Frisian philology.
