Analogy as Structure and Process - Approaches in Linguistics, Cognitive Psychology and Philosophy of Science

The concept of analogy is of central concern to modern cognitive scientists, whereas it has been largely neglected in linguistics in the past four decades. The goal of this thought-provoking book is (1) to introduce a cognitively and linguistically viable notion of analogy; and (2) to re-establish and build on traditional linguistic analogy-based research.

Origins of Grammar: An Anthropological Perspective

An important feature of human language grammar is that it seems to be unrepeated in nature; it does, therefore, seem to be a candidate for what differentiates us as a species. As an emergent capacity, however, it cannot be the whole story: the capacities from which it emerges must be more deeply implicated in our humanness than grammar itself.

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the morphosyntax, semantics, and pragmatics of the major grammatical constructions involved in time reference in Yukatek Maya, a native Meso-american language spoken on the peninsula of Yucatán. The description traces temporal properties in clause structure, lexical predicate classes, verb inflection and derivation, adverbial modification, and clause and sentence combination, and thus covers a substantial part of the core grammar of the language.

This study attempts to consider some aspects of adverb-adjective collocation in English. It explores the semantic properties of some adverbs and their collocating adjectives recorded in two collocation dictionaries, namely, Oxford Collocations Dictionary (OCD) and the LTP Dictionary of Selected Collocations (LTP). The central questions that have guided this analysis are: what exactly does an adverb do to an adjective in Adverb-Adjective Collocation? and what are the restrictions on the combinability of the two lexical items?

Cognitive Interfaces - Constraints on Linking Cognitive Information

This book brings new perspectives to bear on the architecture of the mind and the relationship between language and cognition. It considers how information is linked in the mind between different cognitive and expressive levels - so that people can, for example, talk about what they see and act upon what they hear - and how these linkages are and need to be constrained. The book is concerned in particular with the perception and representation of spatial structure.
