It is in order to explain that Between the Old World and the New was brought into print in continental editions (in Italy, in France and elsewhere) before the publication of the present work. The author has, however, decided, that for the Englishspeaking readers of the two volumes it would be advisable to change the order of publication and to issue first this study of Morals and Manners. The second book, Between the Old World and the New, will appear, in New York and in London, early in the autumn of 1914. New York, April, 1914.
