City of DreamsCity of Dreams

There is a city, that spreads from the edge of the Java Sea, and has grown through the ages to become one of Asia’s great mega cities- Jakarta. European adventurers once dreamt of visiting the fabled far flung city of Batavia- the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The few who turned these dreams into reality entered Batavia through the ancient seaport of Sunda Kelapa- often after a journey of several months. New visitors half a millennium later, continue this ancient dream- from the far flung islands of Indonesia to the distant foreign lands beyond its sea borders.

The Red Badge of Courage; An Episode of the American Civil WarThe Red Badge of Courage; An Episode of the American Civil War

There comes a time in the course of battle when a participant casts his fate to the gods of war, and carries on without question, the task at hand. Living, dying, right or wrong, can be contemplated later. The spirit of the bayonet takes over and carries the youth through the crucible of battle to emerge a short time later several ages older.

Stephen Cranes classic novel gives us a glimpse into the mind of a young soldier as he passes through the experience he will never be able to forget, and possibly awaken him from his slumber in a sweat and panic for years to come.

Sarum - the Novel of England

Sarum - the Novel of EnglandSarum - the Novel of England

This sprawling novel follows the fortunes and losses of five families from the Stone Age through the present time. Each of the families can be identified through genetic characteristics handed down through the ages, not simply physical characteristics, but attitudes and morals, too. There is plenty of action to keep readers motivated to finish the book. Rutherford has a style and energy all his own that should appeal to young readers of historical fiction. This book will be a hit with young adults who have the time and attention for longer works. Highly recommended.
