Semantics: From meaning to text

Semantics: From meaning to textThis book presents an innovative and novel approach to linguistic semantics, starting from the idea that language can be described as a mechanism for the expression of linguistic Meanings as particular surface forms, or Texts. Semantics is specifically that system of rules that ensures a transition from a Semantic Representation of the Meaning of a family of synonymous sentences to the Deep-Syntactic Representation of a particular sentence. Framed in the terms of Meaning-Text linguistics, the present volume closes the publication of the three volume series.

Film DialogueFilm Dialogue

Film Dialogue is the first anthology in film studies devoted to the topic of language in cinema, bringing together leading and emerging scholars to discuss the aesthetic, narrative, and ideological dimensions of film speech that have largely gone unappreciated and unheard. Consisting of thirteen essays divided into three sections: genre, auteur theory, and cultural representation, Film Dialogue revisits and reconfigures several of the most established topics in film studies in an effort to persuade readers that "spectators" are more accurately described as "audiences," that the gaze has its equal in eavesdropping.

Reading and Representing Across the Content Areas: A Classroom GuideThis groundbreaking work redefines traditional ideas of what a ''text'' should be, incorporating new kinds of multimodal texts to revitalize instruction within and across disciplines. The authors provide examples of innovative representations to aid learning in earth science, language arts, mathematics, and social studies classrooms. Each chapter focuses on a specific content area, outlining learning goals, relevant national standards, types of representation that enrich learning, and teaching strategies for developing critical literacy specific to that discipline.

Time: Language, Cognition & RealityThis book considers linguistic and mental representations of time. Prominent linguists and philosophers from all over the world examine and report on recent work on the representation of temporal reference; the interaction of the temporal information from tense, aspect, modality, temporal adverbials, and context; and the representation of the temporal relations between events and states, as well as between facts, propositions, sentences, and utterances. They link this to current research on the cognitive processing of temporal reference, linguistic and philosophical semantics, psychology, and anthropology.
