New Research on Three-Manifolds And MathematicsNew Research on Three-Manifolds And Mathematics

Mathematics has been behind many of humanity's most significant advances in fields as varied as genome sequencing, medical science, space exploration, and computer technology. But those breakthroughs were yesterday. Where will mathematicians lead us tomorrow and can we help shape that destiny? This book assembles carefully selected articles highlighting and explaining cutting-edge research and scholarship in mathematics with an emphasis on three manifolds.

Manifolds and MechanicsManifolds and Mechanics

This book provides an easy introduction to the theory of differentiable manifolds. The authors then show how the theory can be used to develop, simply but rigorously, the theory of Lanrangian mechanics directly from Newton's laws. Unnecessary abstraction has been avoided to produce an account suitable for students in mathematics or physics who have taken courses in advanced calculus.

Index Theory, Determinants and Torsion for Open ManifoldsIndex Theory, Determinants and Torsion for Open Manifolds

For closed manifolds, there is a highly elaborated theory of number-valued invariants, attached to the underlying manifold, structures and differential operators. On open manifolds, nearly all of this fails, with the exception of some special classes. The goal of this monograph is to establish for open manifolds, structures and differential operators an applicable theory of number-valued relative invariants. This is of great use in the theory of moduli spaces for nonlinear partial differential equations and mathematical physics.
