Paper Laterns
Little Mouse loves paper lanterns with their impossible delicate beauty, and the way Old Chen's hands seem to effortlessly cut, paste, and paint his masterful creations. Little Mouse watches and learns until, when Old Chen can no longer make the lanterns, he finds his inner strength and his hidden talent. But more important than Little Mouse's achievement is the bond of friendship between him and Old Chen.

Old Chen is, well . . . old, and neither of his two apprentices are gifted with his skill at crafting beautiful paper lanterns. Without a suitable apprentice, Old Chen fears he has no one to carry on his legacy. Little Mouse is, well, . . . little, and when he wanders into the old man's shop and asks to become a lantern maker, no one takes him seriously. He gets a job sweeping the floor and learns what he can by watching Old Chen and his apprentices. Little Mouse and Old Chen grow closer, and Little Mouse practices diligently and waits for the chance to prove his skill to his friend and mentor.
