English Corpus Linguistics: An Introduction
50

English Corpus Linguistics: An IntroductionThis step-by-step guide to creating and analyzing linguistic corpora discusses the role that corpus linguistics plays in linguistic theory. It demonstrates that corpora have proven to be very useful resources for linguists who believe that their theories and descriptions of English should be based on real rather than contrived data. The author shows how to collect and computerize data for inclusion in a corpus and how to annotate and conduct a linguistic analysis once the corpus has been created.

Corpora and Language Teaching

Corpora and Language TeachingCorpora have changed our views on language and language use and we can also expect to find them in the class-room. It is not only ‘raw’ corpora which are of interest but corpora come with user-friendly programs and software which makes them suitable for the use by learners. However it is clear that there are also problems and that we do not know enough about how learners and teachers experience the use of corpora in the classroom.

Corpus-Based Perspectives in Linguistics (Usage-Based Linguistic Informatics)UBLI has conducted field surveys since 2002 and built spoken language corpora for French, Spanish, Italian (Salentino dialect), Russian, Malaysian, Turkish, Japanese, and Canadian multilinguals. This volume features new research presented at the UBLI second workshop on Corpus Linguistics – Research Domain, which was held on September 14, 2006. The first part consisting of eleven presentations to this workshop shows a wide range of subjects within the area of corpus-based research, such as dictionary, linguistic atlas, dialect, translation, ancient texts, non-standard texts, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and natural language processing. The second part of this volume comprises ten additional contributions to both written and spoken corpora by the members and research assistants of UBLI.

Corpus Linguistics 25 years on

Corpus Linguistics 25 years onThis volume offers a state-of-the-art picture of work undertaken in the field of computer-aided corpus linguistics. While the focus is on English, central insights can be generalised to other languages, as well.
As a work intended to mark the Silver Jubilee of ICAME, the International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English, the book combines surveys of the discipline by some of its major pioneers, including founders of ICAME itself, with cutting-edge work by younger scholars. It is divided into three sections: “Overviewing years of corpus linguistic studies”, “Descriptive studies in English syntax and semantics”, and “Second Language Acquisition, parallel corpora and specialist corpora”.

Exploring Corpora for ESP Learning

Exploring Corpora for ESP LearningThe main aim of this book is to discuss the relevance of corpus work for learners of English as a foreign language and this volume is directed to all those who believe that taking the point of view of the learners into consideration may be important for their job: materials’ designers, teachers and applied linguists in general. I argue that analysing corpora, restricted in the range of the texttypes and topics collected, can be a useful learning activity, particularly for learners of ESP.
