Approaches to Phonological Complexity

Approaches to Phonological ComplexityApproaches to Phonological ComplexityComplexity approaches, developed in physics and biology for almost two decades, show today a huge potential for investigating challenging issues in Humanities and Cognitive Sciences and obviously in the study of language(s). Theoretical approaches that integrate self-organization, emergence, non linearity, adaptive systems, information theory, etc., have already been developed to provide a unifying framework that sheds new light on the duality between linguistic diversity on the one hand and unique cognitive capacity of language processing on the other hand.

The Contrastive Hierarchy in PhonologyThe Contrastive Hierarchy in Phonology

'Contrast' - the opposition between distinctive sounds in a language - is one of the most central concepts in linguistics. This book presents an original account of the logic and history of contrast in phonology. It provides empirical evidence from diverse phonological domains that only contrastive features are computed by the phonological component of grammar. It argues that the contrastive specifications of phonemes are governed by language-particular feature hierarchies.

Variation and Gradience in Phonetics and PhonologyVariation and Gradience in Phonetics and Phonology

This book brings together researchers from sociolinguistics, phonetics, and phonology and provides an overview of current issues in variation and gradience in phonetics and phonology. In this book, variation at every level of phonological representation is addressed. It contributes to the growing interest in gradience and variation in theoretical phonology by combining research on the factors underlying variability and systematic quantitative results with theoretical phonological considerations.

Strength Relations in Phonology (Studies in Generative Grammar)

This collection of papers explores the theme of phonological strength. The general notion of strength plays a central role in explaining a variety of apparently disparate phonological effects relating to language acquisition, tone and pitch accent patterns, as well as segmental distribution. The authors analyze data from a wide range of languages and from a number of current theoretical perspectives.

The Phonology of Dutch (The Phonology of the World's Languages)This second volume in the Phonology of the World's Languages series is the first comprehensive phonological description of Dutch. Booij's analysis engages a number of current issues in phonological theory, and particular attention is paid to the relation between morphology, syntax, and prosodic structure at word- and at sentence-level.
