Diminutives in English
4

Diminutives in EnglishThat English has no diminutives is a common myth. The present study shows, however, that English does possess diminutives, and not only analytic but also synthetic diminutive markers. Analytic markers include, first and foremost, little, as well as other adjectives from the same word field, whereas the inventory of synthetic markers comprises suffixes as, for instance, -ie, -ette, -let, -kin, -een, -s, -er, -poo and -pegs. These markers are examined from a grammatical and a pragmatic perspective in an integrative formal-functional framework.

Different Kinds of Specificity Across Languages

Different Kinds of Specificity Across Languages

This anthology of papers analyzes a range of specificity markers found in natural languages. It reflects the fact that despite intensive research into these markers, the vast differences between the markers across languages and even within single languages have been less acknowledged. Commonly regarded specific indefinites are by no means a homogenous class, and so this volume fills a gap in our understanding of the semantics and pragmatics of indefinites.

Understanding Pragmatic Markers: A Variational Pragmatic Approach

Understanding Pragmatic Markers: A Variational Pragmatic ApproachThe multifunctionality of pragmatic markers makes it difficult to describe their meaning and functional potential. For example, we know very little about pragmatic markers and prosody, their sociolinguistic use (how they are related to the speaker's social class, age, or gender) or their distribution across text types (informal conversation, discussion, and broadcast program).
This book surveys pragmatic markers in a corpus of spoken English, focusing on the functions performed by the markers in different types of text.

Grammaticalization - Theory and Data

Grammaticalization - Theory and DataSince the 1980s theories and studies of grammaticalization have provided a major source of inspiration for the description and explanation of language change, giving rise to many publications and conferences. This collection presents original, empirical studies that explore various facets of grammaticalization research of both formal and functional orientation. The papers of this selection deal with general issues and specific empirical domains, such as personal pronouns; indefinite pronouns; final particles; tense and aspect markers; comitative markers and coordinating conjunctions.
