Men, Women and Property in England, 1780-1870

R.J. Morris reveals how middle class families survived and surmounted the economic difficulties of early industrial England through an examination of wills, family papers, property deeds, account books and letters from the period. He argues that these families were essentially "networked" families created and affirmed by "gift" networks of material goods, finance, services and support--with property very much at the center of their middle class family strategies.

A New Look at Black Families

Charles Willie and Richard Reddick's A New Look at Black Families has introduced thousands of students to the intricacies of the Black family in American society since its publication in 1976. Using a case study approach, Willie and Reddick show the varieties of the Black family experience and how those experiences vary by socioeconomic status. In addition to examining families of low-income, working, and middle classes, the authors also look to the family experiences of highly successful African Americans to try to identify the elements of the family environment leading to success.

Reginald Hill - On Beulah Height
With modernity raising its ugly head in Yorkshire, the grand idea of the Water Board was to flood a local valley to make a reservoir. Of course they had to bulldoze the homes of Dendale, the farming town inconveniently situated in that valley, first, and relocate the families. That was when the children began to disappear. Andy Dalziel was a young detective in those days, and he took the case hard.

One Parent – One Language An interactional approachThis volume examines the relationship between young children's degrees of bilingualism and features of the verbal input which these children receive from their parents. In particular, it seeks to explore the following question: to what extent are families who follow the 'one parent-one language' principle and whose children become active bilinguals this way, different from families who take the same approach but whose children never develop an active command of the minority language? Case studies of six first-born children growing up with German and English were done during the children's third year of life.
