This volume brings together scholars of diverse theoretical persuasions who all share an interest in capturing the role that nominal determination and reference assignment play in the complicated interplay between thought, language and communication. The articles can be divided roughly into five main areas of concern: the conceptual level of determination; the emergence and function of articles; their semantic contribution to nominal interpretation; the morphology and syntax of determiners; and the interplay and contrasts between articles, demonstratives and possessives.

The "woodcutters"of the title derive from an example of a problem of apparent irrationality in Wittgenstein's (1956 ed.). Witchcraft enters the picture from anthropological studies interpreting beliefs about witchcraft as formally inconsistent. What Risjord (philosophy, Emory U.) is getting at is that to understand what he calls the "explanatory coherence" principle underlying social science, "it might be wise to look at cases where it [i.e. interpretation] breaks down." In examining the relationship between evidence and methodology, he discusses interpretative change, explanatory criteria of adequacy, norms, the problem of meaning, and the relationship between the social and natural sciences.

This is by no means an easy text to read. For those unfamiliar with postmodern tropes-and especially those who have never read Baudrillard before-this text may seem especially daunting. I recommend that these people start with the essay entitled 'Simulacra and Science Fiction'. In this essay, Baudrillard details the three orders of simulacra: the first, natural simulacra, are operatic, founded on images, and aim at the restoration of "the ideal institution of nature made in God's image"; the second order are both productive and operative, based on energy, and work toward "a continuous globalization and expansion [and] an indefinite liberation of energy"; the third order, the simulacra of simulation, are "founded on information [and] total operationality, hyperreality, [and the] aim of total control" (121)......

In Trespassing Boundaries, contemporary Woolf scholars discuss the literary importance of Woolf's short stories. Despite being easily available, these stories have not yet received the attention they deserve. Complex yet involving, they should be read not only for the light they shed on Woolf's novels, but in their own right, as major contributions to short fiction as a genre. This volume places Woolf's short stories in the context of modernist experimentalism, then explores them as ambitious attempts to challenge generic boundaries, undercutting traditional distinctions between short fiction and the novel, between experimental and popular fiction, between fiction and nonfiction.
