Reviews:
As thorough as it is socially pertinent. Publishers Weekly

This powerful book looks at the history of slavery and how slave labor shaped the world. The historical precedent of slavery is examined, outlining how it worked in ancient times in Greece and Rome. An exhaustive examination of how European explorations led to the expansion of the slave trade includes information on the enslavement of Native Americans and its damage to their population. Many topics are covered, including insurrection, revolts, the economic boom, what life was like as a slave, achievements of slaves, religion, culture, and much more.

Particularly fascinating are the chapters about the inner workings of the slave trade. Here, the author details how slaves came to be captured and sold, how buyers and sellers functioned, the conditions on the crowded slave ships, and what would take place at sales. Grant highlights the divide slavery caused in the United States, the successes of famous abolitionists, the Underground Railroad, reconstruction, the Civil Rights movement, and human trafficking today. Large color pictures, timelines, maps, small photographs, and quotes fill each busy page, all adding important information to the already thorough main text. Quotes are included from philosophers, explorers, slaves, merchants, captains, African rulers and others.

Typical of this publisher's books, this title contains a phenomenal amount of information presented in a wide variety of formats. This wide-ranging exploration of slavery would be an excellent addition to any collection and particularly useful for students interested in looking up one specific aspect of slavery, as each subtopic is thoroughly explored.
