With the same user-friendly, quirky, and perceptive approach that made Innumeracy
a bestseller, John Allen Paulos travels though the pages of the daily
newspaper showing how math and numbers are a key element in many of the
articles we read every day. From the Senate, SATs, and sex, to crime,
celebrities, and cults, he takes stories that may not seem to involve
mathematics at all and demonstrates how a lack of mathematical
knowledge can hinder our understanding of them.
What is it for marks or sounds to have meaning, and what is it for someone to mean something in producing them? Answering these and related questions, Schiffer explores communication, speech acts, convention, and the meaning of linguistic items in this reissue of a seminal work on the foundations of meaning. A new introduction takes account of recent developments and places his theory in a broader context.
This new series of video-based courses is aimed at professional people
who need to improve their language and communication skills in specific
business areas. Each course takes a common business function such as
giving a presentation or participating in a meeting, and takes learners
through a stage-by-stage analysis of the skills and language they need
to perform these functions effectively in English.
The period 31 BC-AD 43 saw the greatest expansion of the Roman Empire.
Octavian defeated Antony at the battle of Actium and remodelled the semi-professional Roman army into a permanent force of 28 legions.
Octavian became the first emperor (Augustus) and under his leadership the legions conquered northern Spain, all Europe south of the Danube line and Germany west of the Elbe.
The legionaries exemplified the heroic culture of the Roman world and this title takes a behind-the-scenes look at their lives, training, weaponry and
tactics, including the bloody massacre of the Teutoberg forest.

Kipper, the generous, fun-loving dog created by British author- illustrator Mick Inkpen, has a go at four different adventures in this little collection. "The Visitor" finds a dozing Kipper awakened by a gosling tapping at his window. The scared little bird has been separated from his flock by a storm, and Kipper takes him in, warms him up, and makes a snuggly bed in which the gosling instantly falls asleep. The next morning is slightly less tranquil as the visitor leaves muddy tracks everywhere and takes a swim in a cleaning bucket, but Kipper, who loves small animals, laughs it all off.
