Complex Predicates: Cross-linguistic Perspectives on Event StructureComplex Predicates: Cross-linguistic Perspectives on Event Structure

Complex predicates are multipredicational, but monoclausal structures. They have proven problematic for linguistic theory, particularly for proposed distinctions between the lexicon, morphology, and syntax. This volume focuses on the mapping from morphosyntactic structures to event structure, and in particular, the constraints on possible mappings. The volume showcases the 'coverb construction' a complex predicate construction which, though widespread, has received little attention in the literature.

Language, Culture, and Mind: Natural Constructions and Social KindsLanguage, Culture, and Mind: Natural Constructions and Social Kinds

Based on fieldwork carried out in a Mayan village in Guatemala, this book examines local understandings of mind through the lens of language and culture. It focuses on a variety of grammatical structures and discursive practices through which mental states are encoded and social relations are expressed: inalienable possessions, such as body parts and kinship terms; interjections, such as 'ouch' and 'yuck'; complement-taking predicates, such as 'believe' and 'desire'; and grammatical categories such as mood, status and evidentiality.

The Linguistics of Eating and Drinking

The Linguistics of Eating and DrinkingThis volume reviews a range of fascinating linguistic facts about ingestive predicates in the world’s languages. The highly multifaceted nature of ‘eat’ and ‘drink’ events gives rise to interesting clausal properties of these predicates, such as the atypicality of transitive constructions involving ‘eat’ and ‘drink’ in some languages.

The Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics of Spanish Mood (Pragmatics & Beyond New)

altThis study provides a consistent description and explanation of the syntax, the semantics and the pragmatics of Spanish mood.
A major focus of attention is the central role of the truthfunctional categories of realis, potentialis and irrealis as parameters relevant to mood selection in both subordinate and non-subordinate clauses. Furthermore, a proposal is offered for a new typology of clause-embedding predicates. The framework chosen stems from the insight that complement-taking predicates share the property of providing information on the set of mental processes which characterize intentional human behavior.
