Issues of race and racism permeate American society and are of central concern to students and teachers. The chapters in this reference explore how these issues have been addressed in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Native Son, The House on Mango Street, Ceremony, and other major novels widely read by high school students. The works discussed reflect racial issues from a range of cultural perspectives. Each chapter is devoted to a particular novel and provides a plot summary, an overview of the work's historical background, a literary analysis, and suggestions for further reading.
This course is designed to help the student build a grammatical tool kit that he or she will need to employ in analytical argumentative writing. Becuase a solid foundation is grammer is essential, the course will start a review and graded quizzes on each of the four sentence types. Since writing mastery calls for the ability to read, to listen, to discuss, and to write, the course will also take between five and sex listening tests. In the writing of paragtaphs, particular attention will be given to writing an effective topic sentence that will be clauses and intentionally suboradinating secondary information.
