Discovery School - Great Books - George Orwell's 1984

The novel 1984 is a frightening prediction of the future with its references to privacy issues and totalitarian control. The characters Winston and Julia represent hope in a world of dictators. In this video, autobiographical information about Orwell reveals his disillusionment with revolution and his honest desire to change society.

Down and out in Paris and London by George Orwell  BBC Radio, Arts & Drama.

Радиоспектакль BBC о забавных и душераздирающих наблюдениях из жизненого опыта Орвелла, жившего ниже черты бедности в двух из самых богатых городах мира, Париже и Лондоне.
A funny and heartbreaking account of Orwell's experience living below the poverty line in two of the world's richest cities. Written when he was a struggling writer in his 20s, he observes bug-infested hostels and doss houses, work as a dishwasher in Paris, surviving on scraps and cigarette butts, living alongside tramps, a star-gazing pavement artist and a starving Russian ex-army captain. He exposed a shocking, previously hidden world to his readers.

Amusing Ourselves to Death - Public Discourse in the Age of Show BusinessAmusing Ourselves to Death - Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business

Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business (1985) is a book by educator Neil Postman.
The book's origins lie in a talk Postman gave to the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1984. He was participating in a panel on Orwell's 1984 and the contemporary world. In the introduction to his book Postman said that the contemporary world was better reflected by Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, whose public was oppressed by their addiction to amusement, than by Orwell's 1984, where they were oppressed by state control.

The Road to Wigan Pier

The Road to Wigan PierThe Road to Wigan Pier

The Road to Wigan Pier was written by George Orwell and published in 1937. The first half of this work documents his sociological investigations of the bleak living conditions amongst the working class in Lancashire and Yorkshire in the industrial north of England before World War II. The second half is a long essay on his middle-class upbringing, and the development of his political conscience, questioning British attitudes towards socialism. Orwell states plainly that he himself is in favour of socialism; but feels it necessary to point out reasons why many people who would benefit from socialism, and should logically support it, are in practice likely to be strong opponents.

Orwell and MarxismOrwell and Marxism

The failure of more than a handful of writers to explore the links between Orwell and the communists is not difficult to explain. The most obvious reason is that Orwell’s political identity prevents us from appreciating the full scope of his intellectual interests. Because he was a passionate anti-Stalinist, one of the doughtiest opponents not merely of the USSR but of the world communist movement as a whole, we tend to believe that he cannot have been influenced – except negatively – by the things which communists said or wrote.
