Modelling British English Intonation
10

Modelling British English IntonationThe present research sets out to give a melodic description of British English intonation which is so explicit that it can be used for the control of pitch in a speech synthesis system. The description is based on a mixture of acoustic and perceptual analysis of speech samples and, using speech resynthesis as a research tool, any claims made are experimentally verified.

Examining English economic development between the Norman Conquest and the late fifteenth century they [Hatcher and Bailey] present a wonderfully clear exposition of the three 'classic supermodels' that have dominated debates on the medieval economy and its transition towards commercial modernity ... The very real achievement of this book is to make these debates and their consequences accessible and interesting, even at times positively exciting ... few could doubt its usefulness and timeliness.
