Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West 450-900

Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West 450-900Warfare was an integral part of early medieval life. It had a character of its own and was neither a pale shadow of Roman military practice nor an insignificant precursor to the warfare of the central middle ages. This book recovers its distinctiveness, looking at warfare in a rounded context in the British Isles and Western Europe between the end of the Roman Empire and the break-up of the Carolingian Empire. In this work, Guy Halsall relates warfare to many aspects of medieval life, economy, society and politics...

Historical Dictionary of Medieval Philosophy and Theology
21

Historical Dictionary of Medieval Philosophy and TheologyThe Middle Ages is often viewed as a period of low intellectual achievement. The name itself refers to the time between the high philosophical and literary accomplishments of the Greco-Roman world and the technological advances that were achieved and philosophical and theological alternatives that were formulated in the modern world that followed. However, having produced such great philosophers as Anselm, Peter Abelard, John Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, Peter Lombard, and the towering Thomas Aquinas, it hardly seems fair to label the medieval period as such.

Examining the influence of ancient Greek philosophy as well as of the Arabian and Hebrew scholars who transmitted it, the Historical Dictionary of Medieval Philosophy and Theology presents the philosophy of the Christian West from the 9th to the early 17th century. This is accomplished through a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the philosophers, concepts, issues, institutions, and events, making this an important reference for the study of the progression of human thought.

Thinking Medieval: An Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages
31

Thinking Medieval: An Introduction to the Study of the Middle AgesThis book examines the place of the Middle Ages in modern popular culture, exploring the roots of the stereotypes that appear in films, on television and in the press. The book also asks whether "medieval" is indeed a useful category in terms of historical periodization. It investigates some of the particular challenges posed by medieval sources and the ways in which they have survived, and concludes with an exploration of the relevance of medieval history in today's world.
Thinking Medieval is targeted to an introductory academic audience, but it is so well written, easy to read and fascinating it would appeal to anyone with an interest in the Middle Ages. This is really a book about "medievalism" - the Middles Ages in popular culture and modern scholarship - which is extremely helpful in better understanding how to approach and read medieval history. Dr. Marcus Bull is a professor at Bristol University in England.

Feminist Readings in Middle English Literature: The Wife of Bath and All Her Sect

Feminist Readings in Middle English Literature: The Wife of Bath and All Her SectProduct Description:
In recent years there has been a sustained growth of interest in medieval literary culture, and the range of critical activity within this field has expanded greatly, largely in response to the challenges of modern critical theory. Some of the most stimulating work has tackled the subject of sexual difference and gender construction in medieval texts.
Reponding to this tendency, editors Rudy Evans and Lesley Johnson have gathered a singularly effective and impressive collection of essays ranging from writing on such figures as Margery Kempe, Christine de Pisan, Langland, and Chaucer. As one of the first texts ever published on theories of sexual difference and medieval literature, Evans and Johnson contribute incisively both to the debate and discussion of sexual difference in pre-modern literature.
