This book gives an overview of current research on instructed second language acquisition (ISLA). Data-based studies included in this book deal with the acquisition of specific linguistic phenomena (e.g., verb and noun morphology, lexicon, clause structures) in a range of target languages (e.g., English, French, German, Russian) from a variety of instructional settings involving different instructional approaches (e.g., traditional foreign language classes, immersion classes, intensive ESL classes, content and language integrated language classes).
Time in Natural Language investigates the relationship between the syntactic and semantic representations of sentences within the domain of tense. Assuming that tenses are semantically composed of three distinct times, Thompson proposes that these times map onto the syntax in a regular fashion: each time is associated with a unique syntactic head. Adopting the Minimalist approach to syntactic theory, this approach makes possible insightful analyses of syntactic structures involving temporal dependency. Thompson argues that, depending on their adjunction site, temporal adverbials modify different parts of the tense structure of the clause.
This book offers a rich variety of research studies, theoretical and empirical, from Europe and North America in foreign language pedagogy and second language acquisition. Although, they may be able to read and write very well, they often that they can’t understand what the people say to them. English is especially difficult. Because pronunciation of words is not clearly shown by how they are written. But the major problem is being able to listen, think and respond in another language at a natural speed.
