The Way Things Work - Pressure

In Pressure, the islanders work together to retrieve a wedding ring that has fallen down a sink drain. With the help of a visiting inventor, they discover what a straw, plunger, vacuum and jackhammer all have in common: They are all useful tools that operate by manipulating a force called pressure. The islanders discover the differences and similarities between devices that derive their power from changing air pressure (pneumatic machines) and from liquid pressure (hydraulic machines).

The Way Things Work - Screws

In Screws, inhabitants of Mammoth Island are in the process of building a new observation tower out of stone blocks when one of the islanders gets trapped at the top of the tower. With the help of a visiting gallant knight and his trusty mammoth, they are able to build a ramp around the circular structure and create a giant simple machine known as a screw. Turning the tower into a giant screw allows the islanders to spin the tower down into the soil, bringing the trapped inhabitant of Mammoth Island close to the ground -- and saving the day!

They decide to experiment with different engines and discover how each works -- from simple rockets to turbofan jet engines to gasoline engines. Comparing the advantages and drawbacks of these internal combustion engines, the islanders determine which one will serve their business best and ensure that their pizzas are delivered on time.

The Way Things Work - Flight

In Flight, inhabitants of Mammoth Island attempt to use a trusty mammoth to deliver canvas awnings when a gust of wind creates quite a stir! The islanders discover that the power of the wind, combined with the unique shape of the awning, is able to overcome the considerable weight of the mammoth, lifting it up into the sky like a kite. As soon as the wind dies down, however, the mammoth returns to Earth with a crash. The islanders begin experimenting and eventually come up with the right combination of the four forces involved in flight: gravity, lift, thrust and drag. Balancing these forces allows them to harness the power of the air and take to the skies!
