The almost always entertaining and imaginative Murakami here weaves a complex tale in a simple setting, covering a great deal of ground and making for an enjoyable read. A delightful story, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle demonstrates the enormity of Murakami's literary imagination and his thoughtful insight into the meaning of postmodern reality. The translation, capturing the style and aura of the original, is equally enjoyable. It is regrettable, however, that the English version has been subjected to extensive cutting, undoubtedly under pressure from the publisher."
An old-style gangster novel, appearing somewhat incongruous in today's context. Bill Duffy, a press photographer is thrown out of his regular job in the Tribune, but is approached by a gangster, Morgan, to take pictures of a woman, supposedly his wife, being blackmailed. However, the woman is actually the wayward daughter of a corrupt politician, who has the local police in his pockets.
PreSchool-Grade 2-- Simon's musical romp through the zoo has been transformed into a picture book for young children. The illustrations, featuring giraffes in "cool shades," frogs on surfboards, and antelopes with Red Cross flags attached to their antlers, will prompt some giggles from young animal lovers.
