Dictionary of Plant Breeding
5

One of the oldest scientific traditions, plant breeding began in Neolithic times, with methods as simple as saving the seeds of desirable plants and sowing them later. It was not until the re-encounter with Mendel’s discoveries thousands of years later that the genetic basis of breeding was understood. Developments since then have provided further insight into how genes acting alone, or in concert with other genes and the environment, result in a particular phenotype.

Nero Wolfe and his investigator/bodyguard/secretary ARCHIE GOODWIN are just as much "eyes" as their predecessors Holmes and Watson – with a big helping of the American P.I. genes that defined the genre.

Measuring Gene Expression
18

Measuring Gene ExpressionIn the post-genomic age, much biomedical research looks at when, where, and at what level genes are expressed. Measuring Gene Expression: The Basics is an all-in-one introduction to the main methods of measuring gene expression, including RT-PCR, differential display, RNA interference, reporter genes, microarrays, and proteomics, as well as a section on RNA isolation and analysis. There will be an overview of each method: its pros and cons, sample preparation, sources of error, and data interpretation.

The Art of Genes : How Organisms Make Themselves
How is a tiny fertilised egg able to turn itself into a human being? How can an acorn transform itself into an oak tree?

Over the past twenty years there has been a revolution in biology. For the first time we have begun to understand how organisms make themselves.

Behavior Genetics Principles: Perspectives in Development, Personality, and Psychopathology (Decade of Behavior)

Behavior Genetics Principles: Perspectives in Development, Personality, and Psychopathology (Decade of Behavior) Behavior Genetics Principles: Perspectives in Development, Personality, and Psychopathology presents work that addresses both historical and novel approaches to the study of genetic and environmental influences on behavior. Contributors to this volume use behavior genetics as a means for understanding the etiology of mental illness as well as normal development. They ask: what genes predispose a person to develop a specific personality trait? What about an inclination to a psychological disorder? How do environmental factors enhance or mute genetic factors? Do they regulate inherited individual differences in behavior and personality throughout a lifetime? Behavior Genetics Principles explores the many connections between genes, personality, development, and psychopathology. It focuses on research influenced by Irving I. Gottesman, a pioneer in behavioral genetics research. As a mentor and a colleague, Gottesman has worked to examine the role of genes and environmental factors using both traditional and novel study designs and analytic methods. This stimulating volume, by colleagues who have helped shape the field of behavioral genetics, presents cutting edge work that carries on his legacy. This volume should interest researchers, practitioners, and students alike.
