There is continuing government pressure on public services to "reform". Expectations of new forms and standards of delivery, joined-up practice and the reconnection of services to users are high. Unfortunately, many policy makers have become reliant on mechanistic top-down audit and inspection regimes as the means of implementation. This book sets out to redress the balance.
There are many common themes, topics that recur chapter after chapter; the effect of examinations; the problem of set-books for reading; censorship; the literary canon and innovations that depart from it; nationality as a criterion for choosing authors; meeting multicultural needs and demands; dialects are they a problem? 'new grammars' what do they offer us? and so on.
The increasing demands for teaching excellence in higher education have led to new academics needing induction into what it is to teach and how students learn. In the United Kingdom in particular, the creation of the Institute for Learning and Teaching (ILT) has increased the pressure on universities to provide and deliver courses that meet the demands and recommendations of the ILT within the domain of teaching and learning.
