VARIATION IN THE INPUTVARIATION IN THE INPUT

This book contains chapters that investigate children’s acquisition of different types of variation in the primary linguistic data (PLD) that they are exposed to. Natural languages often display word order variation that may at first sight seem like instances of optionality. The first collection of papers focussing on the acquisition of word order variation. The book contains papers addressing first language acquisition of a wide selection of languages. The papers discuss new child language data The volume provides new theoretical insights

Language Variation and Change, Volume 22, Issue 01, March 2010

Language Variation and Change, Volume 22, Issue 01, March 2010Language Variation and Change is the only journal dedicated exclusively to the study of linguistic variation and the capacity to deal with systematic and inherent variation in synchronic and diachronic linguistics. Sociolinguistics involves analysing the interaction of language, culture and society; the more specific study of variation is concerned with the impact of this interaction on the structures and processes of traditional linguistics. It concentrates on the details of linguistic structure in actual speech production and processing (or writing), including contemporary or historical sources.

Syntactic Variation and GenreSyntactic Variation and Genre

This volume is based on a workshop we organized as part of the Annual Meeting of the German Linguistic Society (DGfS) in 2007. The workshop focused on the role of syntax in the emergence of new genres and brought together insights from research that uses the concept of genre as a reference-point for the description (and, possibly, explanation) of patterns of morphosyntactic variation.

Parametric variation in linguistic theory refers to the systematic grammatical variation permitted by the human language faculty. Although still widely assumed, the parametric theory of variation has in recent years been subject to re-evaluation and critique.

The Limits of Syntactic Variation

The Limits of Syntactic VariationAgainst the background of the past half century’s typological and generative work on comparative syntax, this volume brings together 16 papers considering what we have learned and may still be able to learn about the nature and extent of syntactic variation. More specifically, it offers a multi-perspective critique of the Principles and Parameters approach to syntactic variation, evaluating the merits and shortcomings of the pre-Minimalist phase of this enterprise and considering and illustrating the possibilities opened up by recent empirical and theoretical advances.
