Everyday English, Book 1 by Jean Sherwood Rankin (Rare Book Collection)
To make good speech a sort of social obligation will impress a child infinitely more than all the abstractions known as rules of grammar. There is no more interesting, even fascinating subject than that of language use, whether relative to the old or young. Yet vital books about language are the exception. There seems to be a wellnigh fatal penalty attached to the handling of such a theme; to wit, the dryasdust manner, a lack of all freshness, color and movement. This is all the stranger since we are all implicated in the questions of the use and abuse of the mother tongue and no topic is more eagerly discussed or awakens a more alert attention. The little volume here following contains, it seems, a thoroughly acceptable treatment of the principles of language use for the guidance of children.
The laws of Venus, to give them their proper name, have a venerable and lengthy history and there are ample if now somewhat understudied records of their courts and practices. To gain an initial sense of the scope of this history and the nature of these practices we have to return to the philosophical tradition, to Plato, and there trace the roots of a law that later spanned the courts of Europe and gave rise to the most enduring of forms of poetic justice.

After The Beginning In a brilliant flash about fourteen billion years
ago, time and matter were born in a single instant of creation. An
immensely hot and dense universe began its rapid expansion everywhere,
creating space where there was no space and time where there was no
time. In the intense fire just after the beginning, the lightest
elements were forged, later to form primordial clouds that eventually
evolved into galaxies, stars, and planets. This evolution is the story
told in this fascinating book. Interwoven with the storyline are short
pieces on the pioneering men and women who revealed those wonders to us.
