As Napoleon's tenacious infantry rampages across Europe and his armada lies in wait for Nelson's smaller fleet, the war does not rage on land and water alone. Raining fire and acid upon their enemies, they engage in a swift, violent combat with flying tooth and claw... for these aviators ride dragons.

With all the attention that has been lavished upon this series in its brief existence, it's gratifying to see that it hasn't caused Naomi Novik to lose focus. To go from one's debut to stardom in such a short time could throw anyone off balance, affecting the work for good or ill. But not Novik. Indeed, what impresses all throughout this trilogy is the effort Novik has put into making each book's story sufficiently different so that each stands on its own, while telling one consistent metastory when taken together. That and her dedication to storytelling craft earn Novik fantasy's crown for 2006.

This is the second volume of the Temeraire series.

If you haven’t read the first, you may say yet another “cute dragon” book

However, the combination of military history, sympathetic characters, and engaging style makes this series great, intelligent fun. Stephen King describes it as a cross between Susanna Clarke and Patrick O'Brian, and he's spot on—after charting the Napoleonic Wars, with a difference- dragons as Air Corps, an epic journey to Imperial China follows...
