But as soon as you write it down… that’s where you’ll run into trouble! Especially, if you’re sitting an exam, writing an essay or an important email!

Pronunciation: The intrusive /r/Pronunciation: The intrusive /r/

The intrusive R pronunciation happens between two words, where the first word ends in a vowel sound and the second word begins in a vowel sound. Usually, there is what’s called a schwa sound that ends the first word. The r comes between the two words because, in some cases, it’s easier for people to say it that way.

Speaking Canadian English: An Informal Account of the English Language in CanadaWhat do English-speaking Canadians sound like and why? Can you tell the difference between a Canadian and an American? A Canadian and an Englishman? If so, how? Linguistically speaking is Canada a colony of Britain or a satellite of the United States? Is there a Canadian language?
Speaking Canadian English, first published in 1971, in a non-technical way, describes English as it is spoken in Canada – its vocabulary, pronunciation, syntax, grammar, spelling, slang. This title comments on the history of Canadian English – how it came to sound the way it does – and attempts to predict what will happen to it in the future. This book will be of interest to students of linguistics.

A Practical Introduction to Phonetics - 2nd editionNow in a new edition, this unique interactive introduction to the study of phonetics shows students how to examine the entire range of human sounds through a series of 124 introspective experiments carried out in their own vocal tracts. It systematically covers all types of speech modification (breath, voice, whisper, creak), articulation (the ways in which the air stream is finally modulated to generate specific types of sound), and prosodic features (stress, syllable, tone, intonation). This text also includes a chapter on sound systems--the ways in which particular languages utilize and systematize the universal sound-producing potential of humans.
