Blood of Angels

Blood of Angels

I really enjoyed the first two novels of the Straw Men trilogy and this one didn't disappoint, either. Marshall keeps a good pace, throws enough curves to keep things interesting, and leaves some deliciously unresolved plotlines without sacrificing the integrity of the story. The final chapter in the series, this novel is probably the most "serious" of the group, a more sober adventure than the previous installments which offered numerous moments of dark humor. But it's still a very interesting ride full of tension and bloody mayhem, from which there may be no survivors.

Elise Broach - Masterpiece

With overtones of Chasing Vermeer and The Borrowers, this inventive mystery involves two families that inhabit the same Manhattan apartment: the Pompadays-a slick, materialistic couple, their infant son and thoughtful James, from the wife's previous marriage-and a family of beetles, who live behind the kitchen sink and watch sympathetically as James's charms go unappreciated.

The Grove

The GroveThe Grove

In this gritty noir novel, John Rector weaves an intensely sinister tale. Dexter McCray is a farmer with a dark past that continues to haunt him. As a man struggling with alcoholism, he’s used to being looked at with pity and suspicion in his community. So, after waking from a blackout to discover the body of a teenage girl in the nearby cottonwood grove, he can't be entirely sure he's innocent. With no memory of the previous night, he sees no choice but to investigate the crime himself. Fortunately he’s not alone. He has some help…in the shape of the dead girl herself. In The Grove, readers are treated to more than a warped and imaginative mystery.
