Annie and Max Darling, sleuths and owners of the Death on Demand bookstore, are at it again. This time a week-long Agatha Christie conference has been organized by Annie and her co-sponsor, Lady Gwendolyn Tompkins. They have arranged for speeches, movies, discussions, a dress ball, contests, and teas. And then Neil Bledsoe, a book critic, shows up uninvited. He is despised by a great many people at the conference, and Annie suspects trouble may occur, which it does almost immediately. After a couple of murders, the conference seems to be falling apart.

Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't (Audiobook)

Pfeffer (The External Control of Organizations), professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University, posits that intelligence, performance, and likeability alone are not the key to moving up in an organization; instead, he asserts, self promotion, building relationships, cultivating a reputation for control and authority, and perfecting a powerful demeanor are vital drivers of advancement and success. The book has a realpolitik analysis of human behavior that isn't for everyone but its candor, crisp prose, and forthrightness are fresh and appealing.

This readable, passionate book is surprisingly optimistic: Seattle, Chicago, and New York are making long-term, comprehensive plans for flooding and drought. Impoverished farmers in the already drought-stricken African Sahel have discovered how to substantially improve yields and decrease malnutrition by growing trees among their crops, and the technique has spread across the region; Bangladeshis, some of the poorest and most flood-vulnerable yet resilient people on earth, are developing imaginative innovations such as weaving floating gardens from water hyacinth that lift with rising water.
