Published in 1886, 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', along with 'The Secret Garden', cemented Burnett's reputation as a leading children's author. Briefly put, the story relates to the life of Young Cedric Errol, who lives in New York with his mother. Cedric's English father dies and the young lad is summoned by his grandfather the Earl to the family castle. The grandfather seeks to transform Cedric in to a traditional lordling; alas, it is Little Lord Fauntleroy (Cedric) who ends up transforming the Earl and the hearts of his English relatives.
The Atlas of North American English provides the first overall view of the pronunciation and vowel systems of the dialects of the U.S. and Canada. The Atlas re-defines the regional dialects of American English on the basis of sound changes active in the 1990s and draws new boundaries reflecting those changes. It is based on a telephone survey of 762 local speakers, representing all the urbanized areas of North America.
