Warfare in Medieval Brabant 1356 - 1406Warfare in Medieval Brabant 1356 - 1406

The medieval duchy of Brabant was one of the most powerful principalities of the Low Countries. During the second half of the fourteenth century, it underwent a particularly dramatic period in its history: the House of Leuven was on the point of disappearance, the duchy was coveted by Philip the Bold of Burgundy, who was already dreaming of extending the 'Burgundian Empire' and, by a network of alliances, Brabant was drawn into the Hundred Years' War. A Modern English course for foreign studentsA Modern English course for foreign students

For that reason, too, a series of conversations is included in which the ordinary affairs of life, housekeeping, football, buying a suit of clothes, tennis, a visit to the doctor, looking for "digs," etc., are given not in "literary" English but exactly in the colloquial language that would be used in informal talk. Vocabulary has necessarily been drawn from the objects found in the classroom or admitting of easy demonstration, but after that an effort has been made to gain freshness by the use of the living vocabulary of everyday speech.

Letters, diaries and newspapers are drawn upon to detail personal struggles with addiction and the trials of those who cared and despaired.

The Companion to Kate ChopinThe Companion to Kate Chopin

Although she enjoyed only modest success during her lifetime, Kate Chopin is now recognised as a unique voice in American literature. Her seminal novel, The Awakening, published in 1899, explored new and startling territory, and stunned readers with its frank depiction of the limits of marriage and motherhood. Chopin's aesthetic tastes and cultural influences were drawn from both the European and American traditions, and her manipulation of her 'foreignness' contributed to the composition of a complex voice that was strikingly different to that of her contemporaries.
