The hallmark of the neurologic disorder RLS is an irresistible urge to move, most commonly at night. Symptoms vary in severity and can result in sleeplessness, fatigue, and impaired function, and can affect families and relationships as well. Written by leaders in this field and sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology, Restless Legs Syndrome explains what is known about RLS, including its causes and manifestations, and what can be done to manage it. Specific chapters cover treatments, including drug and non-pharmalogic therapy, RLS in children, lifestyle changes, resources, and more.

Crafting Writers K-6

Crafting Writers K-6Now, many teachers at the elementary and middle school levels are being expected to teach the craft of writing—the more artistic side of this art and science. Although this is absolutely a positive shift in education, it has also been challenging for many teachers.
Crafting Writers begins by looking at the art of writing itself. Chapters 2 and 3 introduce readers to specific craft and a process for noticing craft in writing. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 offer many specific writing techniques that relate to different categories of craft such as word choice and sentence variety. Chapter 7 moves from the art of writing to the teaching of writing and offers strategies for teaching craft in whole-class lessons. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 look at teaching craft in one-on-one conferences and demonstrate how knowing many specific craft techniques can help teachers see strengths and possible next steps in all levels of writing. The last two chapters look at aspects of writing workshop that support overall instruction: the management of conferences, group conferences, and using rubrics to assess writing.

Atlas of the World's Deserts (2004)Divided into chapters that concentrate on particular aspects of the deserts, their geology, life forms, history and future, this book describes the hostile and extreme environments that cover more than a seventh of the world's surface. Lavish photographs capture the stark beauty of each desert's colours and light; maps show the varying topography of different regions, and the enthralling text describes some of nature's most remarkable adaptations and humanity's most resourceful communities. The chapters are divided by spectacular picture essays that feature a detailed view of a particular region, such as California's Death Valley, portraying its landscape, natural life and human residents. Throughout the book, boxes highlight fascinating aspects of the story of the deserts, from how sand dunes are formed to how the sidewinder moves, from how the Bedouin cope with the desert to the cave-dwelling quartz miners of central Australia.

Current Trends in the Development And Teaching of the Four Language Skills"Current Trends in the Development and Teaching of the four Language Skills" builds connections from theory in the four language skills to instructional practices. It comprises twenty-one chapters that are grouped in five sections. The first section includes an introductory chapter which presents a communicative competence framework developed by the editors in order to highlight the key role the four skills play in language learning and teaching. The next four sections each represent a language skill: Section II is devoted to listening, Section III to speaking, Section IV to reading and Section V to writing. In order to provide an extensive treatment of each of the four skills, each section starts with a theoretical chapter which briefly illustrates advances in the understanding of how each skill is likely to be learned and taught, followed by four didactically oriented chapters authored by leading international specialists.
