The Colossal Book of Short Puzzles and ProblemsThe Colossal Book of Short Puzzles and Problems

Finally collected in one volume, Martin Gardner's immensely popular short puzzles; along with a few new ones from the master. For more than twenty-five years, Martin Gardner was Scientific American's renowned provocateur of popular math. His yearly gatherings of short and inventive problems were easily his most anticipated math columns. Loyal readers would savor the wit and elegance of his explorations in physics, probability, topology, and chess, among others.

The Colossal Book of Mathematics: Classic Puzzles, Paradoxes, and ProblemsThe Colossal Book of Mathematics: Classic Puzzles, Paradoxes, and Problems

This weighty collection, containing 50 of what the Annotated Alice annotator and popular science journalist considers his best Scientific American "Mathematical Games" columns, is sure to please the relatively small but intensely loyal coterie of Gardner fans. Arranged in 12 broad categories (arithmetic and algebra, plane geometry, topology, infinity, etc.), these pieces cover subjects that will delight recreational math buffs, such as Penrose tiles, hypercubes, Klein bottles and fractal music.

Alchemy, the ancient scienceAlchemy, the ancient science

While dated--the volume is part of a set on the occult published by Doubleday in 1976--the information contained within is accurate and timely. Moreover, the work contains many exquisite illustrations/reproductions, making it a visually appealing source. I would highly recommend Alchemy: The Ancient Science to any beginner. Used, it's a real value and essential to any alchemical/hermetic library.

Story of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and the Snow Dog: A NovelStory of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and the Snow Dog: A Novel

This sequel to Lessing's futuristic novel Mara and Dann continues the saga of Dann, the refugee boy prince of the Mahondi, who searched with his older sister Mara for habitable land on a planet Earth beset by a new ice age. Several characters from that novel reappear, including Griot, a soldier who served under Dann, but Mara has died in childbirth. Grief deafens General Dann to the pleas of those who believe he alone can save civilization from the warring chaos of displaced populations.

Mara and Dann: An AdventureMara and Dann: An Adventure

Tenderly perceptive, Lessing's first far-future novel since her celebrated Canopus in Argos: Archives series of the late 1970s-mid '80s features two appealing orphans precariously reaching adulthood on Earth thousands of years from now. The Ice Age brought on by the ecological rapaciousness of today's society is receding, bringing lethal drought to the Southern land of "Ifric," where a power struggle in her family has stranded seven-year-old Mara, who is fiercely caring for her even younger brother, Dann, in a remote village of neo-Neanderthals.
