Welcome to  Understanding Spoken English - a focus on everyday language in context. This book, along with its accompanying audio recording, has been designed to help you to understand English as it is spoken in 'everyday' situations in English speaking environments around the world. As a student of English as a second or foreign language, you are no doubt aware of the difference between the formally presented language of many textbooks and the speech you hear, outside the language classroom , in the English speaking media or in conversations with native English speakers.

classes. We, the authors, have many years experience of teaching ESOL in the UK. The resources are inspired by the kind of tried and tested material we
have been creating and using in the ESOL classroom.

Skills for Life ESOL  is a course  for new arrivals in the UK wishing to study English. It is an adult course that takes students from beginner/starter level to a point equivalent to a GCSE in English.
The course is designed to help new arrivals in the UK learn communicative English as quickly as possible.  I focusses on real life scenarios for those living in the UK.  It thus contains a lot of material and subjects not normally covered in general English coursebooks.
It is written and produced by the UK Department of Education and Skills (DfES).
