The Guided Comprehension Model was developed more than a decade ago to help reading educators teach students how to comprehend text. In this volume the Guided Comprehension Model for English Learners is introduced and explained how educators can use it to teach English learners, their fastest growing student population, to understand what they read. The Guided Comprehension Model is based on the idea that reading is a social constructivist process. Underpinned by current research and beliefs about best practice, the Model provides a detailed, research-based, classroom-tested process for teaching reading from a comprehensionbased perspective. When the teachers use the Model to teach English learners, they teach these students to become active, strategic readers by providing explicit strategy instruction, numerous opportunities for engagement, and a variety of texts and instructional settings.
