This book focuses mainly on fractional Brownian fields and their extensions. It has been used to teach graduate students at Grenoble and Toulouse's Universities. It is as self-contained as possible and contains numerous exercises, with solutions in an appendix. After a foreword by Stéphane Jaffard, a long first chapter is devoted to classical results from stochastic fields and fractal analysis.
The book contains a collection of papers dealing with the question of how rhythm shapes language. Until now, there was no comprehensive theory that addressed these findings adequately. By bringing together researchers from many different fields, this book will make a first attempt to fill this gap.

Because composition students will major in a wide variety of disciplines, Fields of Reading draws on the major divisions of the curriculum -- arts and humanities, social sciences and public affairs, and sciences and technologies -- to present well-crafted and high-quality writing from these fields. Chosen by five editors who are all distinguished teachers and writers, the selections are organized in each division by writing purpose (reflecting, reporting, explaining, and arguing) in order to show how writing must be suited to a particular situation in order to be effective.
