The Burghs and Parliament in Scotland, c. 1550-1651The Burghs and Parliament in Scotland, c. 1550-1651

Existing studies of early modern Scotland tend to focus on the crown, the nobility and the church. Yet, from the sixteenth century, a unique national representative assembly of the towns, the Convention of Burghs, provides an insight into the activities of another key group in society. Meeting at least once a year, the Convention consisted of representatives from every parliamentary burgh, and was responsible for apportioning taxation, settling disputes between members, regulating weights and measures, negotiating with the crown on issues of concern to the merchant community.

Crusade, Heresy and Inquisition in the Lands of the Crown of Aragon 1167 - 1276Crusade, Heresy and Inquisition in the Lands of the Crown of Aragon 1167 - 1276

Based on extensive study of the primary and secondary sources, Damian J. Smith here provides the first full account of the combined influence of crusade, heresy and inquisition in and about the lands of the Crown of Aragon until the death of James I the Conqueror in 1276. This work deals with the gradual loss of influence of the Crown in Provence and Languedoc culminating in the treaty of Corbeil in 1258. It then investigates the extent of heresy in the lands of the Crown and in other areas of Christian Spain. In the final part, the origins and development of the Aragonese inquisition are discussed in detail with a particular emphasis on the role of Ramon de Penyafort.

Crown and Country: A History of England through the MonarchyCrown and Country: A History of England through the Monarchy

From one of our finest historians comes an outstanding exploration of the British monarchy from the retreat of the Romans up until the modern day.
The monarchy is one of Britain’s longest surviving institutions – as well as one of its most tumultuous and revered. In this masterful book, David Starkey looks at the monarchy as a whole, charting its history from Roman times, to the Wars of the Roses, the chaos of the Civil War, the fall of Charles I and Cromwell's emergence as Lord Protector – all the way up until the Victorian era when Britain’s monarchs came face-to-face with modernity.

English Government in the Thirteenth CenturyEnglish Government in the Thirteenth Century

The size and jurisdiction of English royal government underwent sustained development in the thirteenth century, an understanding of which is crucial to a balanced view of medieval English society. The papers here follow three central themes: the development of central government, law and justice, and the crown and the localities. Examined within this framework are bureaucracy and enrolment under John and his contemporaries; the Royal Chancery; the adaptation of the Exchequer in response to the rapidly changing demands of the crown; the introduction of a licensing system for mortmain alienations; the administration of local justice; women as sheriffs...

The Reigh of Elizabeth I - Court and Culture in the Last DecadeThe Reigh of Elizabeth I - Court and Culture in the Last Decade

This book is about the politics and political culture of the "last decade" of the reign of Elizabeth I, in effect the years 1585 to 1603. It takes a critical and provocative look at the declining Virgin Queen. Many teachers and their students have failed to consider the "last decade" in its own right, or have ignored it, having begun their accounts in 1558 and struggled on to the defeat of the Armada in 1588. Only two major political surveys have been attempted since 1926. Neither allots adequate space to Crown patronage, Puritanism and religion, society and the economy, political thought, and literature and drama. This book will be indispensable to a fuller understanding of the age.
