Some Principles of Literary CriticismSome Principles of Literary Criticism

This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide.

When I Was Old

When I Was OldWhen I Was Old

Simenon lived in a mist of rumour and legend. Of course, this was largely of his own making and he does little to correct matters in the book. Although known as something of a, to put it politely, lover of women's company, he does not go into this Paris Match side of things at all. Instead, he lets us see a bit of the inner man, or what a clever writer may be selling to us as such, and, all the criticism of him after his death notwithstanding, I for one felt that I got somewhat closer to the enigma. It was almost as if he was saying (in about 1963) that he wasn't such a bad fellow after all.

Re-Vision - Essays in Feminist Film CriticismRe-Vision - Essays in Feminist Film Criticism

In their introduction, the editors of Re-vision observe that during the seventies and early eighties, women's work in film—the making of feminist documentaries, the organizing of women's film festivals, the writing of criticism and theory—was remarkable for its high degree of cooperation and collaboration. It is fitting, then, that this volume of thoughtful, provocative essays of feminist film criticism is the result of their collective work as well as the collaboration of the Center for the Humanities at the University of Southern California and the Center for Twentieth Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Shakespeare in the Romanian Cultural MemoryShakespeare in the Romanian Cultural Memory

This book, with a foreword by Arthur F. Kinney, covers the major issues of the stage history and translation in the negotiation between Romanian culture and Shakespeare, raising questions about what a Shakespeare play becomes when incorporated in a different and allegedly liminal culture. The study reflects the growing cross-fertilization of approaching Shakespeare in Romanian translations, productions, literary adaptations, and criticism, looking at the way in which Romania's collective cultural memory is constructed, re-examined, and embedded in the adoption of Shakespeare in certain periods.

This is great for general reading on Foucault. It does a great job tying together a lot of the things Foucault tried to say in his books. If you're a policy debater trying to become a Foucault buff, get this book. The chapter on critique does an excellent job drawing the distinction between criticism and transformation.
