If you’ve ever tried to use a grammar book to look up something straightforward - such as when to use ‘that’ or ‘which’, or where to put the apostrophe when a word already ends in ‘s’ - you’ll know it’s virtually impossible to find what you want. Even the books supposedly designed for people with no knowledge of grammar seem to use complicated jargon, and you need a natural ability for the subject and a desire to plough through endless paragraphs of complicated text just to pinpoint your problem.

The Kills
The title of the newest installment in Fairstein's Alexandra Cooper crime series (The Bone Vault; The Deadhouse; Final Jeopardy) refers not only to the several bodies that turn up in the course of the novel but to the creeks and channels that crisscross the watery periphery of Lower Manhattan. From her downtown office-and with the aid of NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace-the doughty assistant DA tackles a complicated case, the rape of 36-year-old Paige Vallis. Psychotic Andrew Tripping is accused of the rape as well as of the physical and mental abuse of his own 10-year-old son, Dulles.
Detective Matt Payne, newly promoted to Sergeant and assigned to Homicide, finds himself in the middle of three major assignments. The first, a fatal shooting at a fast-food restaurant, seems simple, but rapidly becomes complicated. The second begins complicated and only gets more so, as Payne becomes involved with a local guru who has fled the country, leaving behind a mummified body of his girlfriend in a trunk.
